Kukicha Twig Standard tea is made from the twigs, stems, and stalks of the fragrant Camelia sinensis shrub, all of which are steamed, dried, aged, and roasted to produce a uniquely delicious Japanese tea that has an appealing dark reddish brown color. Kukicha has a lot less caffeine than most teas, so you can enjoy its dark rich cup with subtle nutty flavors and warming sweetness most any time of day.

Twigs,stems,stalks of Camelia sinensis shrub
I'm always game to try something new, so when I came across Red Leaf Tea's Kukicha Twigs I was more than intrigued. When I got my sample, I rushed to try it, not really knowing what to expect. Despite have no expectations of this tea, I was still pleasantly surprised by it.
Red Leaf describes this tea as being "made from the twigs, stems, and stalks of the fragrant Camelia sinensis shrub, all of which are steamed, dried, aged, and roasted to produce a uniquely delicious Japanese tea." And it certainly lives up to the description: it really does look like a bunch of roasted twigs. Smells kind of what you'd expect roasted twigs to smell like, too; savory and smokey, like jerky.
Once brewed, though, it loses the smokeyness and smells more like weak coffee, which I quite like, not being a huge fan of coffee and all. The taste is similar, but leans more toward a very light black tea than coffee, which once again I quite enjoy. It does have a nutty flavor, as Red Leaf's site suggests, and has absolutely no bitterness that I could detect, which is always a plus if you really don't like bitter.
Bottom Line: A unique tea that also offers a decent cup when brewed. A bit pricey at $6.25/ounce (if you buy it 3.2 ounces at a time, which is the cheapest), but despite that, it's definitely going on my must-buy list.
