This captivating Brazilian herbal blend, Yerba Mate, is traditionally enjoyed in the country from a hollow calabash gourd, and sipped with a silver straw known as a bomba. Tracing its roots to common social customs in countries such as Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil, Yerba Mate Tea is distinctive for its strongly herbal, grassy, and almost vegetable like flavor. Strikingly similar to green tea, but with a stronger flavor, Yerba Mate Tea does not become bitter with over-steeping, making it ideal for tea drinkers of all types. Mountaineers enjoy Yerba Mate when at altitude and feel it helps them adjust to less oxygen.

Every time I try something from Red Leaf, I become more impressed. Usually plain ol' yerba mate doesn't interest me, but this one has a touch of citrus flavor that I love. I am not sure if there is any artificial flavor in this blend -- I don't think so -- but it's very fresh and pure tasting. A bit grassy, ever so slightly vegetal, but very sweet, and can be left in hot water for long periods of time, because it never turns like green tea.
As far as mate is concerned I am usually more a fan of the roasted variety; I think this is the first time I have had mate unroasted, unflavored, and really enjoyed it. There is not a lot to say about yerba mate; which is why maybe I do not have a strong intereet in drinking it regularly; but I am surprised by how much genuine flavor this has. I would still opt for regular tea over this, but for yerba mate, which offers limited flavor and complexity, this is perhaps the best sample of it I have ever had.
I have had a lot of success, as mentioned, with Red Leaf Tea's offerings, and am looking forward to some more.
