A unique concoction made from extra fine Pinhead Gunpowder tea grown in China, this one stands out for its dark colored appearance as well as its strong, brisk flavor. The name comes from its striking resemblance to gunpowder, which is due to the process of rolling the young green tea leaves into small pellets prior to firing in a pan. This tea is for those who like a bold taste but in a drink that is packed full of healthy benefits to the body.

Steeping instructions:
Amount of water: 6 oz
Amount of Tea: 1 Flat teaspoon
Water Temperature: 160° F
Steeping Time: 1-3 minutes.
Note: Do not use boiling water for Green and White teas as they will burn and create bitter flavors.
A good way to guess water temperature without a thermometer is to bring the water to a boil, and wait about 30 seconds (for White tea) or 60 seconds (for Green tea) before pouring over the leaves.
Rolled young Green tea leaves
About three years ago, I had a cup of gunpowder tea that was so amazingly unappealing, that I really hadn't been able to bring myself to drink any of the stuff ever since. However, with a little packet of Red Leaf Tea's pinhead gunpowder arriving in my sample assortment, I figured that three years was an adequate length of time to let go of my past experience and start anew. This tea's name comes from the fact that the leaves, being tightly rolled into small pellets, somewhat resemble gunpowder. I have to start off my review of this tea by stating how unexpectedly impressed I was with this tea. It was crisp and clean in its flavor, lacking any harshness or overly earthy flavors that can be found in some green teas. I found the flavor to be very mellow by green tea standards, although the tea was certainly flavorful enough to be satisfying. There was an interesting melon-esque sweetness to this tea. The overall flavor is unique and resists comparisons to other types of green tea, such as dragonwell or a Japanse sencha. Honestly, I am not sure I fully agree with Red Leaf tea's assessment of its "strong, brisk flavor" , but regardless, I enjoyed this tea and would recommend it to others. This is a tea that I could drink at any time of day and which could suit any occassion, from a morning wake-up cup to an afternoon relaxation cup. While I did enjoy this tea more as a hot tea, the iced version was also a very decent cup. At the time of this review, Red Leaf Tea is running a deal of free shipping on all orders, so if this tea is something you might be interested in trying, here's a little extra incentive.
